Meet our athletes

There's more to our athletes in the Aviva GB & NI Team than just what you see on the track or in the field. During the Aviva preparation camp in Ulsan - South Korea, we took some time to find out what makes our talented competitors tick and learn a little more about them as they prepare to take on the world's best.

Christian Malcolm training

Christian Malcolm - 200m, 4x100m

Do you have any superstitions and why? I used to wear a chain, but I don’t now. I have grown up a bit since then.
What would you be if you weren't an athlete and why? If I wasn’t an athlete, I’d be a footballer playing for Manchester United. I’m a big Man U fan.
Tell us about your roommate: My roommate is Dwain Chambers and I have been rooming with him since I was 16 or 17, so we get on great.

Eilidh Child training

Eilidh Child - 400m Hurdles, 4x400m

Do you have any superstitions and why? I always wear a Hearts FC wristband.  My dad got me supporting them when we were in Berlin for the last World Championships, so I got my coach to bring a new one out with him.  I have some spares this time though.
What would you be if you weren't an athlete and why? I’d be a PE teacher. I’m taking a year off from working as one at the minute to prepare for 2012.
Tell us about your roommate: I am rooming with Lee McConnell this time and it’s great because Lee has got Iplayer, so we can watch Eastenders!

Greg Rutherford training

Greg Rutherford - Long Jump

Do you have any superstitions and why? Not anymore. I used to wear the long socks and have some bands for my wrist, but I got rid of them this year because I think I was worrying about them too much.
What would you be if you weren't an athlete and why? Either an archaeologist or a coffee-shop owner. I love anything to do with ancient history, like Time Team, but I also love coffee.  I’m going to train to be a proper barista in the next couple of years, so I can open a shop after my athletics career.
Tell us about your roommate: Steve Lewis, we roomed at the last World Championships and we get on well and motivate each other.

Hannah England

Hannah England - 1500m

Do you have any superstitions and why? I don’t have many, but I always try and wear pink socks in a race if I can. If I’m feeling down, then I wear pink for a training session.
What would you be if you weren't an athlete and why? If I wasn’t an athlete I’d be doing a PhD, because I very nearly did one in Biochemistry anyway, but I decided to run instead.
Tell us about your roommate: Barbara Parker, we used to live together in America when I went to university at Florida State, so we always try to catch up on trips.

Harry Aikines-Areetey training

Harry Aikines-Aryeetey - 100m, 4x100m

Do you have any superstitions and why? Not really. I like to pray before the race to say thank you to God for letting me be the best that I can.
What would you be if you weren't an athlete and why? When I was younger I wanted to be a food taster, but then I went to a friend’s house and didn’t like the food, so that was out. Now, I’d be a salesman, most likely for cars - I’ve got a gift of the gab.
Tell us about your roommate: James Ellington, we are probably the vainest room in the camp.  I’m struggling to think who’s the best-looking. I was filing my nails just before I was interviewed.
